AI / ML Consulting Service
Got loads of data related to your domain of expertise? And a gist that AI / ML might help you tackle your research questions more efficiently? Then reach out to ETH AI Center's AI & ML consulting service, and we'll map out your options together.
Mission
As a service for researchers of ETH Zurich and the ETH domain, ETH AI Center offers AI & ML consulting. This project continues a previous, similar service provided by the institute of machine learning (IML) at ETH's Department of Computer Science.
Our goal is to allow ETH-affiliated researchers to benefit from our machine learning and data science expertise. We offer the opportunity to discuss your research problems with a fellow or member of the ETH AI Center, who will guide you through a possible solution in an efficient manner.

How to Participate
Please submit your consulting request through the contact form. We will evaluate your research problem and assess whether it matches the expertise available at the ETH AI Center or Institute of Machine Learning.
If this screening is successful, a consulting meeting will be scheduled with one of our researchers. Follow-up sessions may be arranged, depending on the nature of the problem and the discussion needed. In some cases, collaboration may be extended to the joint supervision of a master’s thesis.
Please note that our limited availability results in variable waiting periods.
Your Research Questions and Our Expertise
ETH AI Center fellows and researchers have state-of-the-art knowledge in machine learning, artificial intelligence and data science, but most likely little to no expertise in your field. If you have access to data but no concrete idea of what to achieve with it, we will not be able to help.
In your problem description, therefore, please describe an actual use-case and expected model output for your available data. For example, please provide an example of the form: "If I give this input data to a machine learning algorithm, I want it to provide this output."
What you can expect
Our consulting service may follow one of three scenarios:
- Ideally, our researchers will identify your problem as already solved in the ML/AI literature. In this case, they will refer you to relevant works, code and/or algorithm libraries and will explain how to implement the solution for your application of interest.
- Most likely, your problem has been partially solved but requires additional research or engineering to fit your particular purpose. This could be achieved through joint supervision of an ETH master’s thesis, for instance.
- Finally, if your research problem is too complex to address under our limited resources, you may be referred to an ETH AI Center or other machine learning researcher interested in investigating the matter in a collaborative research project.
However:
- Our service does not have the resources to implement possible solutions for you.
- Our service mostly provides support for entities within the ETH Domain. Other requests may be handled by the external page Swiss Data Science Center.
- For algorithm or statistical questions please contact the consulting service of the Center for Algorithms or the Seminar of Statistics.
- The Data Science Support of Scientific IT Services (SIS) work in collaboration with the consulting service and offer resources for the implementation of the entire solution on a daily rate or on long lasting subscriptions. For further information please contact SIS directly.
