Art Encounters Biennial

Since 2015 the Art Encounters Foundation in Timişoara, Romania, has organized a Contemporary Art Biennial. In 2023, from May 16th to July 19th, is not only the 5th edition, but Timişoara is also Cultural Captial of Europe. In occasion of this, Art Encounters Foundation has invited our curator Adrian Notz to curate an exhibition with regional and international artists on the topic of art and science.

For the Biennial we use Albrecht Dürer «Rhinocerus» woodcut print from 1515 as a starting point, which is also a key work in ETH’s Collection of Prints and Drawings, into the topic. The woodcut is a remarkable example of artistic imagination, because Dürer never saw the rhino but based his illustration only on sketches and descriptions by others. It is also a great example of how art and science, 500 years ago, were still understood as one. Exploring this European tradition of scientific and artistic imagination for creating a narrative for our world, we will also include artists and their projects developed at the AI Center in the biennial, such as the David Graeber Institute, Nora Al-Badri, Carlos Amorales, Rohini Devasher, Aparna Rao + Søren Pors, Karin Sander, Liat Grayver, Christian Waldvogel, et al.
